19th Summer School of Economics titled "POLITICAL ECONOMY OF INTERNATIONAL MIGRATIONS AND REGIONAL GROWTH" was officially opened on Monday, 18th July by Jovan Zubović, Director of the Institute of Economic Sciences. In the opening ceremony, introduction speeches were held by Marko Malović, Programme Director of Summer School of Economics and Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes, Head of Team National Programmes at Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Serbia.
The Summer School of Economics is a unique program in the Western Balkans that brings together eminent lecturers, young researchers and outstanding students from the Region and beyond. The School gives participants the chance to learn about contemporary issues in economic theory and practice, to interact and share their views and experiences with eminent professors and young intellectuals.
Summer School of Economics offers 16 hours of lectures and 8 hours of interactive workshops and discussions. The School's goal is twofold:
The School applies interactive methods of education by combining lectures and debates. Emphasis is put on the active participation of students in the education process. Lecturers at the Summer School of Economics are distinguished international scholars, professors from the region and beyond and local economic policy makers, experts from various institutions including World Bank, OECD, IMF and other domestic and international organisations. Participation at the Summer School of Economics is completely free of charge for all selected participants.
The School is organised by the Institute of Economic Sciences in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung
The target group are advanced undergraduate (at least 3rd year of bachelor studies) and graduate students in social sciences and humanities from the Western Balkan region. The Organization Committee will select around 30 candidates (15 students from the Western Balkan region and 15 from Serbia), with outstanding applications who demonstrate an interest in the main topics of the school and eagerness to learn and interact.
After fifteen years of transition, Balkan countries are still facing serious economic problems reflected in high public debt, modest growth and regional development imbalances. Recovery from the economic crisis is visible but slow and fragile. For the last couple of years, it is ubiquitous issue for both researchers and policy makers on how to ensure more dynamic economic growth, improve political relations and provide more balanced regional development.
As a global phenomenon, migrations have become of specific importance for the region since the beginning of the European refugee crisis in 2015. Balkan countries were not prepared for the rising number of arriving refugees. Meanwhile, the richest EU countries have been perceived to be the final destinations for the most of the refugees thus occupied with their own problems and jeopardized mutual relations. In combination with the adverse effects of the recent financial crisis and fragile recovery, this put new pressure on the national economies. Finally, migration issue have opened numerous questions for the policy makers:
For the most of the aforementioned problems, students have heard from the media. University curricula are slowly changing and have been rarely focused to the contemporary issues. Most of the university professors are not aiming to answer or discuss these sensitive issues. That practices create serious burdens for the future young leaders, making them unable to develop critical thinking and with significantly lower capacities to resolve problems, analyze, create and influence policies. One of the aims of the Summer School 2016 is to gather the most prominent young intellectuals and the most recognised lecturers ensuring discussion on the aforementioned topics. We are looking forward to creating new generation of leaders capable of tackling contemporary economic and political issues.
30 participants in the field of social sciences and humanities will be selected (especially in economics and related disciplines, such as law, political science, sociology, organizational science and the like).

Regular deadline for sending applications is June 10th, 2016.
The Selection Committee will be in charge of announcing the final list of participants no later than the 20th of June. The factors most affecting the outcome will be the motivation letter, the recommendation letters and an interview (for those outside of Belgrade, a phone interview will be conducted). Those who have been chosen will need to confirm their participation by the 10th of June.
The participants who are not from Belgrade will be accommodated at the hostel in downtown Belgrade. All meals are included.
All participants will be provided lunch and refreshments during the lectures.
