Zoran Popov (1939 - 2014) was born in Belgrade. He finished elementary school in Borovo and high school in Vukovar. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade in 1962. After graduation, he started working at the Institute of Economic Sciences in Belgrade (IES), and from 1976 to 1981, he was the director of the IES. He received his master's degree in 1965 from Williams College, Center for Development Economics, Williamstown, Mass, USA. He received his doctorate in 1974 at the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade, with a dissertation entitled "System of demographic accounting. Problems of integrating demographic and other social statistics". In addition to his research career, he was also engaged in academic work. His field of research was economic development and macroeconomics. His notable work includes: System of Regional Demographic Accounts (1975); Demographic Accounting System (1979), Social planning and extended reproduction (Consortium of economic institutes for the macro-project "Economic system of the SFRY") (1979), The Functioning of the Social Planning System (1982).
