Shift to electric car production: national strategies in central and eastern Europe

Shift to electric car production: national strategies in central and eastern Europe

Project funding scheme: Visegrad Fund

Team coordinator of the Institute of Economic Sciences: Petar Mitić, PhD

Duration of the project: 2024-2025

Description:

The Institute of Economic Sciences is participating in the implementation of the project in collaboration with HUN-REN CERS, Institute of World Economics, Hungary (project leader), Prague University of Economics and Business, Czechia, SGH Warsaw School of Economics, Poland, and Pan European University, Slovakia.

Given the significant investment required to meet the European Commission’s roadmap, with a particular focus on bridging the gap in the development and production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, Central Europe is a key player in this endeavor. This region, which includes the Visegrad 4 countries and Serbia (V4+S), is of great importance for European automotive production and attracts notable investments from electric vehicle battery manufacturers. The main objective of this project is to strengthen the position of V4+S by reducing dependence on assembly-based activities and integrating more high-value components into the automotive industry value chains. The project aims to answer the following questions: (1) What prevailing investment patterns can be observed in response to technological change in the V4+S region? (2) How have changes in the global value chain of the automotive industry influenced the dynamics of the regional industry? (3) What common and different opportunities and challenges have emerged during technological change in the V4+S region? (4) What policy recommendations can be formulated to facilitate the integration of higher value-added activities in the automotive industry of V4+S?
